The Master Gardener Program of Kitsap County will return to the Bainbridge Island Farmers Market this week, along with a special demonstration by Alchemy Industrial Arts, an island-based nonprofit encouraging environmentally savvy reuse of material through welding and fabrication classes.
“We continue to look for interesting, helpful sources that bring people to the Saturday market,” said Peter Weber, market president and owner of Farmhouse Organics.
“For years, the Master Gardeners have provided useful tips, terms and ideas. The sessions offered by Alchemy will be our first in a season-long calendar of hands-on demonstrations,” he said.
The presentation by Alchemy Industrial Arts will introduce children — and their parents — to the basic tools of blacksmithing. Market visitors
will receive hands-on experience with the forge, anvil, tongs, vises and other hand tools used in the blacksmithing trade. Along with the physical examples of forging, the demonstrations will target the importance of patience, awareness, concentration and safety.
The Master Gardener Program is affiliated with Washington State University. Volunteers educate the public about a variety of topics, including organic gardening, youth gardening, water quality and landscaping.
The farmers market will be outside at the Town Center starting at 9 a.m. every Saturday through Dec. 17. For more information, visit www.bainbridgefarmersmarket.org.
