Island’s water depletion should be reported on | Letters | April 15

It’s pretty surprising that the Review has completely ignored the water study done by the USGS that came out in March. It made the evening news on KING-5 and got a long article in the Sun. The Review has never mentioned it. This is big news. In every citizen survey done in the last 12 years, water availability is the top concern of the citizens on Bainbridge.

The study clearly shows that the water system’s Fletcher Bay aquifer is being depleted. While it will take some time, continued development and poor land management will have impacts that could speed the process along. While the study will have its naysayers and critics, it still confirms that we are running out of water.

We have to take this really seriously. We now know what’s happening. Those of us who watch the news and read the Sun know about the study. The Review needs to step up and do its part to educate citizens about this important study.

Editor’s note: The Review published a story on July 30, 2010, titled “Study reveals that aquifer’s water level continues to decline.” The story was based on the USGS’ preliminary analysis, which mirrored the agency’s final report.
