Our fight against the chains must continue | LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the editor:
Further to Robin Melton’s Nov. 13 letter re: Winslow Drug:
Yes! We have not only superfluous big-chain drugstores, but a second worse-than-superfluous entire shopping center. Everybody please keep in mind the value of boycott. Keep in mind, for instance, the town of Henniker, New Hampshire, whose citizens rose up effectively to protect their local long-family-owned community drugstore. By concerted citizen action, including concerted threat of boycott, they successfully put a stop to a proposed Rite Aid.
Here are a couple of articles referencing that victorious effort:
“‘Rite Aid/Wrong Town’ Appeal”: www.articles.baltimoresun.com/1998-05-18/news/1998138017_1_rite-aid-corp-henniker-destiny
“Up Against the Mall”:

The success seems to have held — even now (17 years later). If I Google “Henniker NH drugstores,” the only result is Henniker Pharmacy.
Please, may we resume doing as well for Bainbridge Island? We lost that direction, two shopping centers ago; we have a lot of catching up to do.
