Bainbridge blotter | Sleepy driver on Highway 305

Selected reports from the Bainbridge Island Police Department blotter.

THURSDAY, JAN. 14

8:16 p.m. A driver in a 2016 Nissan was traveling south on Highway 305 just north of Day Road when he went into the ditch. A witness said he saw the vehicle swerving before it went off the road.

The driver of the Nissan, a 30-year-old Bremerton man, said he didn’t remember the crash and may have fallen asleep. Police found no signs of impairment or intoxication.

The driver was treated by medics and driven home by his wife.

A tow company removed the vehicle from the side of the road.

The driver was cited for not having proof of insurance; the vehicle was a company car and was new.

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 13

8:24 a.m. A red kayak was discovered floating in the ferry lane in Eagle Harbor about 75 yards away from the ferry terminal. There were no people in the water, no paddle and no lifejackets in the kayak. Observers noted an unusual tide that day.

A construction company used a crane to pull the kayak out of the water and it was secured at the city’s public works yard.

The kayak was owned by a 48-year-old Bainbridge man, who said it had floated away from his Wing Point property.

FRIDAY, JAN. 8

8:16 p.m. A witness saw an elderly man in a 2014 BMW hit a 2012 Nissan Versa while backing up in the parking lot near the Rite Aid and then drive away.

The witness was not sure that the man knew he had hit another vehicle.
