Review staff’s sweet selections for National Candy Day | THE BAINBRIDGE BLAB

Though trick-or-treating time has come and gone, it is, in fact, Nov. 4 that is recognized as National Candy Day, according to nationaldaycalendar.com.
The day was instituted to celebrate candy in all of its delicious varieties and its important place in our popular culture.
“It was in the late 13th century that the Middle English word candy began to be used, coming into English from the Old French ‘cucre,'” according to the website. “‘Candi,’ was then derived in turn from Persian ‘Qand’ and ‘Qandi,’ cane sugar.
“Way back in time before sugar was readily available, candy was made from honey,” according to the website. “The honey was used to coat fruits and flowers to preserve them or to create forms of candy. There is still candy that is served in this form today, but it is typically seen as a garnish.”
Since 1979, the world has produced more sugar than can be sold, making candy very attainable and cheap.
The two top-selling candies in America are reportedly M&Ms and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Below, the Review staff weighs in our their own favorite sweet treats:
Editor Brian Kelly sided with the masses and said that Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are his candy of choice.”The only time we got these as kids was at Halloween. The rest of the year, we suffered with Malo Cups. Totally not the same!” Coming in second: Almond Joy.
Reporter Jessica Shelton is divided and could not be forced to decide between Twix and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Maybe a Twix made with Reese’s? Hmmmm.
Reporter Luciano Marano said he loves the Take 5 candy bar, and believes that pretzel, caramel, peanuts, peanut butter and chocolate separately just can’t compare. “I can’t go back, man,” he said. “I just can’t.”
Marketing Representative Marleen Martinez said she doesn’t go in for candy too often, though has been known to chow down on some red licorice – Red Vines only, she addd and definitely NOT Twizzlers.
