Weekend weather report: Rain, clouds, sun | THE BAINBRIDGE BLAB

Welcome back, weekend. It’s been too long.

Here are our Best Bets for how to spend your favorite 48 hours right here on the Rock:

Not that you really need an excuse to hit up the farmers market, right? But things are fresher than usual this week as the festivities are getting fruity (tomatoes have seeds, you know) at the Tomato Taste Off Saturday, Sept. 17 in Town Square. Bring your own prized tomato – however you say it – or just come to watch celebrity guest judges Brendan McGill and Brandon Thompson dig in and divvy up the bragging rights.

Ah, yes. The best part about summer being over.

The Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce is launching the inaugural Island Oktoberfest celebration at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Treehouse Café

The outdoor beer garden will consist of choice suds from three local breweries, as coordinated by our very own brewmasters: Bainbridge Brewing Company.

Drink it down to the tune of Oompah music by the Hometown Band. Raffle prizes from island businesses will include Dreamboat Sailing Adventures, Bainbridge Cinemas, Bon Bon Confections and The Salthouse Mercantile.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 day of. The first 200 paid tickets will receive a free 12 ounce commemorative glass beer stein at the event.

The party (21-and-over only) concludes with a rocking bluegrass band from Portland, Oregon on the Treehouse stage.

Check out www.treehousebainbridge.com/event/oktoberfest for more info and to purchase tickets.

Let’s talk about racism. Sound fun? Probably not. What if I told you there would be art and music and performances? Maybe a little more inviting, right? Come to Town Square from 5 to 6 p.m. (family focused time) and 7 to 9 p.m. (adult time) Saturday, Sept. 17 to explore the work on display as part of Bainbridge Island’s first Arts Against Racism festival.

Get yourself downtown for the final Winslow block party of the summer from 12 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18. Celebrate the impending arrival of (official) fall and enjoy music, food and family friendly fun all along Winslow Way for one last gorgeous get together.

Not exactly a feel good story, but a praise-gathering piece of work nonetheless: Iowa-based writer Jan Netolicky will visit Eagle Harbor Book Company to talk about her novel “We Dare Not Whisper,” a haunting look at a family which illuminates the suffering of individuals with bipolar disorder and the unthinkable challenges facing those closest to them at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18.
