Less money? Then become more active | Letters | Feb. 6

In the midst of these economically troubled times, I spent a very wonderful morning at Port Blakely Park on Martin Luther King Day. There were kids and adults of all ages pulling ivy and collecting trash on the beach.
The kids were having a great time – exploring, pulling ivy, picking up trash, and hanging out with friends and adults – by joining in a common purpose.
Of course, it helped to have a sunny day, but I think we probably would have had fun even if it were a cloudy day.
I deeply appreciated our new president’s call to roll up our sleeves and see how we can help rather than standing back and asking where is my share.
I often feel challenged by people who say that they hate paying taxes, yet complain that the state/federal government doesn’t do enough for them.
I wish we had a fairer tax system, but until then, how do we fund our common interest projects and programs?
Here people are pitching in to care for a public park – something we can all share and enjoy.
Although I wish the state had enough money to maintain Fay Bainbridge and Fort Ward parks, I am also very ready to say, “let’s assume responsibility.”
I would rather see that money go to pay to maintain teacher/student ratios, or health care for those who can’t afford it.
There are enough smart, talented and healthy people on this Island to help maintain our public treasures – not necessarily with money (as fewer of us have extra amounts of that) but with our sweat and good will.
I want to thank the people who went to the trouble of organizing the MLK day events – and the people who work on trails, and our shared environment year round.
Let’s pitch in, Bainbridge, and see how sustainable we can make our life here.
