Peltier is our modern day Paul Revere | LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the editor:
We are writing to support Ron Peltier’s candidacy for Bainbridge Island City Council.
Ron’s entire working career as a carpenter has been quietly supportive of the Bainbridge community in that he made a conscious choice to limit his work to non-development (both residential and commercial) projects. He and his wife Polly have similarly conducted their personal life by buying or growing only organic food, composting and recycling, and minimizing automobile use.
When the city planning department approved an unnecessary new mall at High School Road and Highway 305, Ron became increasingly active in working to make the island a better place as this project would provide additional commercial space of clearly unproven need and with significant adverse environmental impacts, including the removal of over 800 trees. His concern led to the creation of Islanders for Responsible Development, whose emails kept interested islanders abreast of development situations and encouraged participation in ongoing public review meetings.
Ron testified at the final public review meeting for the new mall where he lucidly articulated the numerous aspects of how city planning’s approval did not comply with the comprehensive plan guidelines. He spoke for many islanders in this regard. Sadly, the current construction activity shows this effort did not deter the mall’s final approval.
Ron has continued to act as a modern day Paul Revere, notifying islanders about important and relevant matters of interest under consideration by the city council and about opportunities to speak to Council about those matters.
Electing Ron to the city council will be a significant first step toward obtaining regulations to support the comprehensive plan and provide sensible and responsible oversight of future developments that will properly consider Bainbridge’s finite natural resources. He inspires people with his honest, just and forthright manner. He will work tirelessly as a council member to accomplish what is right, sustainable and fiscally responsible for Bainbridge in all areas of Council’s purview.
