Best wishes

To the editor:

One of the best decisions that I have ever made was to run for City Council. I left a message to Lara (Lant) on Election Night, congratulating her on her victory. Social media posts notwithstanding, she will find the city of Bainbridge Island to be in very good shape.

Together with my colleagues, we delivered honest government (it’s all there), tackled climate change (still have a long way to go), made progress on affordable housing (still have a long way to go), and acted against the Trump Administration’s cruelty (just getting started, unfortunately).

My service on council ends this year (an unbroken eight-year stretch of holding office hours will end Dec. 6 at CUPS), and I wish the new council all the best addressing the many challenges ahead.

Believe in democracy

To the editor:

The people in charge up at the school district are afraid of democracy. Instead of letting the traditional election process work, school boardmembers have a habit of quitting before their term is up, which then allows the school board to pick their successors.

Every single member of the school board, except for one, was appointed first and then became the shoe-in incumbent at the next election, and are usually unopposed. And guess who they pick to succeed them…people who think like they do.

Why don’t the voters get to choose their representatives on the school board in fair and open elections?
