Bainbridge Island briefs

Candidate questions

Do you have questions for local candidates running for office in November?

The League of Women Voters of Kitsap will be conducting various forms of candidate informational programs for the upcoming general election Nov. 4. Races up for grabs include: Bainbridge Island, Poulsbo, Bremerton and Port Orchard City Council; Bremerton and Poulsbo Mayors; Bremerton Municipal Court Judge, and School District Directors for Bainbridge Island, Poulsbo, Central Kitsap, Bremerton and Port Orchard.

The League is looking to the public for questions to ask all these candidates. Go to https://www.lwv-kitsap.org/candidate-forum-questions to submit questions.

Trail opening

The Sunny Hill to Nute’s Pond Trail is open, the second trail built under the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation’s Trails Connect Bainbridge Island campaign.

The 0.3-mile wooded trail connects the existing Sunny Hill Trail (south of Country Club Road) with quiet Nute’s Pond park on Toe Jam Hill, per a news release.

The project was funded by private gifts to the Parks & Trails Foundation.

Everybody Eats!

The Bainbridge Island/North Kitsap Interfaith Council is holding a series of fundraising and food collection events that will help hungry people locally and globally during the week of Sept. 21-28.

So far, plans include:

Sept. 22: Prayers for a Hungry World at 6 p.m. at Pia the Peacekeeper, Sakai Park. Bring non-perishable food items for Helpline and Fishline.

Sept. 24: Food Drive at T &C; non-perishable food to be donated to Helpline House food bank.

Sept. 28: CROP Dance 1:30 p.m. at Eagle Harbor Congregational Church. Participants are asked to raise pledges for the interfaith event led by Dances of Universal Peace. Funds raised will benefit Church World Service (an international relief and development agency), Helpline House, and Fishline.

The CROP Dance takes the place of the Interfaith Council’s traditional CROP Walk, which has been part of the IFC’s fall calendar for more than 20 years.

“However, we encourage people who would rather walk than dance to raise pledges and take their own individual or small group CROP Walk of any length during ‘Everybody Eats!’ week. Walk funds will benefit Church World Service, Helpline House, and Fishline,” a news release says.

An anonymous donor has agreed to match the first $20,000 raised for the walk/dance.

Community Grants

The Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation’s 2025 Community Grants program opens Sept. 1, with applications due Oct. 1.

Grants of up to $3,000 are available for qualifying park and trail projects. Grants are awarded to capital improvement projects that enhance parks, trails and recreational opportunities.

Skateboard film

A local independent skateboard film is premiering at Bremerton’s Roxy Theatre Oct. 4 at 8 p.m.

Catch a ride across a decade-plus journey through the final frontier of Toebock American Folklore. From the sticks to the streets, this cinematic experience follows alongside a few unsung heroes. The film features Jacob Scherrer, Connor Ferguson, Storm Fog, Bobby Dodd, Steve Perdue, and co-stars Travis Knight, Kevin McGowan, Steven Tran, and some senior Toesmen.

“With the wide open sky as their roof and the long dusty road as their bed, they push to leave behind their legacies in skateboarding and in the one-road towns that know their names,” a news release says.

Visually impaired support group

The Bainbridge Island Visually Impaired Support Group will be meeting Sept. 10 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the BI Senior Center and on Zoom.

Bainbridge Prepares representatives will provide suggestions on how visually-impaired people can best prepare themselves and their homes for disasters, emergencies and the coming winter, per a news release.

The Zoom link will be emailed out the day before the meeting. If you don’t have a computer and want to call in (1-253-205-0468) the meeting ID is 846 2070 4703; passcode 706326.

For information or to RSVP for in-person attendance, call 206-780-2835.
