On June 14, hundreds of community members gathered at the Bainbridge Island ferry terminal to take part in the nationwide “No Kings” protest against the Trump administration aboard the Seattle/Bainbridge ferry.
“There are real consequences to what’s been…ongoing within the federal government, and the actions by the Trump administration, and those impacts are growing every week,” Greg Relaford said, a member of Indivisible Bainbridge, an organizer of the event.
Relaford said the protest was organized by Indivisible Bainbridge and Kitsap-based Evergreen Resistance with additional support from other community groups. Despite the high numbers of people, Relaford said the atmosphere felt less like a tailgate party and more resembled a family picnic.
“Everyone that I’ve talked to found the Saturday demonstration gave them the experience of hopefulness,” he said.
Due to the large number of participants, many didn’t make it on the 10:25 a.m. sailing; instead, roughly 400 protesters assembled at the intersection of Winslow Way and Highway 305, he said.
Relaford said Washington State Ferry staff were supportive and highly professional. During the crossing, in addition to WSF staff, Washington State Patrol troopers were also onboard. Relaford said no violence occurred as part of the protest.
“ The central thing is to make sure that people know if they’re worried about the loss of democracy and the rule of law, they’re not alone, ” he said.
“No Kings” protests occurred in over 1,500 cities across the country with millions participating, per advocacy group, nokings.org.
