Wednesday, Dec. 3
9:44 a.m. A man left his truck parked at the Bethany Lutheran park-and-ride at 5 a.m. Dec. 2 and found the left rear tail light assembly was missing on the 2012 Toyota Tacoma when he returned.
Replacement parts will cost $230.
2:34 p.m. A 37-year-old Bremerton man was questioned by Bainbridge police after an employee at the Ace Hardware store said he left the store without paying for a chop saw. He was stopped after the left the store by a store employee and detained until police arrived.
When an officer talked to the man, he said he wanted to file a complaint for false arrest. He said he had gone into the store to buy a saw for “Rick,” his employer.
He said he had picked up some empty boxes while in the store, along with the chop saw, but forgot he had the saw when he walked out with the empty boxes.
A store employee said the man was observed putting empty boxes into a cart, and then putting the saw under the boxes before leaving. An officer told the man the store had a right to detain him.
When asked how he was planning to pay for the saw, the man had trouble answering. He then said he had planned to get a cashier’s check from Rick, who was waiting for him outside the store in a truck. He also said he had the saw but had gone outside to get the check. When an officer told the man he had changed his story, the man became upset and said Rick had driven away when he saw him get arrested and left him at the store.
Police discovered the man was wanted on outstanding warrants for shoplifting and driving with a suspended license. He was arrested and booked into jail on the warrants. When asked about the warrants, he said he had been pressured into shoplifting something for his child’s birthday.
Police also found a black Subaru with the keys inside and a cell phone that was charging on the seat. When an officer called a number the suspected shoplifter had given him, the phone in the car began to ring.
Police believe the man made up the story about Rick and the truck.
