The Spartans secured their largest win of the season behind Ryan Rohrbacher’s 26 points, as Bainbridge (6-4, 4-1 in Olympic League) beat the Kingston Buccaneers (3-6, 1-4 OL) 81-43 at home Jan. 6.
Rohrbacher is averaging 27 points per game on the season so far. The Spartans are in second place in the OL behind Bremerton (10-1, 6-1 in OL) with their only loss of the season coming against the Knights 71-42 Dec. 16.
“He’s [Ryan Rohrbacher] one of the best shooters in the state,” Bainbridge coach Scott Orness said. “And you know, it’s hard even at the college level playing dead eye shooters.”
The Spartans established dominance early in the first quarter, building a 10-point lead at 17-7 with Rohrbacher and Kaden Thielmann leading the way. Rohrbacher totaled 15 points by the end of the first.
Buccaneer guard Vaka Tameilau scored the first points of the second quarter for either squad with a three-pointer. Later in the second, Rohrbacher hit a fadeaway three while getting fouled, generating a four-point play and giving the Spartans a 31-13 lead with two minutes remaining in the half.
The Buccaneer offense struggled to keep the game within reach, letting the Spartans jump out to a 22-point lead at halftime, 41-19. Rohrbacher led the Spartans with 26 at half, and Tamileau led the Bucs with seven.
“I feel like this game was a great example of working on getting to the hoop a little bit, trying to finish through contact,” Rohrbacher said.
In the third quarter, Bainbridge continued to generate consistent scoring opportunities through an up-tempo offense, giving them a 63-32 lead going into the fourth quarter. Buccaneer Aiden Heffernan led Kingston with eight points at the end of the game.
“We just have to get tougher and control the things we should be able to control, like our effort all the time,” Orness said. “That’s part of me coming and building the culture here.”
