Injuries continue to plague the Spartans as Bainbridge lost to North Mason at home 28-14 Oct. 4 to remain winless on the season.
Bainbridge (0-5, 0-3 in Olympic League) played their second consecutive game without starting quarterback Nate Putman, who suffered a season-ending injury in week three against the Bremerton Knights.
“It’s gonna be a tough road for us this year,” Bainbridge coach Dan Schoonmaker said. “(We) got six senior starters out, just rough.”
Spartan wide receiver Rowan Meek got Bainbridge on the board immediately with a kickoff return for a touchdown on the first play of the game, giving the Spartans an immediate 7-0 lead.
Bainbridge had another opportunity to build on their lead on their next offensive possession, but went three-and-out.
North Mason eventually capitalized on the Spartans’ offensive struggles, driving downfield twice and scoring two touchdowns to give the Bulldogs a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, which ended up being the same score at halftime.
“We’re banged up at linebacker with the guys we have in here, so it’s just a tough year with injuries,” Schoonmaker said. “I mean, the only silver lining is our younger guys are getting a lot of experience.”
Bainbridge made a quarterback change in the second half, subbing in Meek for Charles Cox. Meek rattled off a 30-plus yard QB run, getting the Spartans in field goal range for the first time all game. Nonetheless, the Spartans turned the ball over on downs.
But the Bulldogs responded by driving downfield on the Spartans, scoring another touchdown to increase their lead to 21-7.
Spartan cornerback Heath Voegtlin intercepted a pass at the beginning of the fourth quarter, giving Bainbridge starting field position past the 50-yard line and an opportunity to trim the deficit. However, not even two minutes later, Meek threw an interception. North Mason put together another long drive after that, negating any chance for a Spartan comeback.
“The outcome isn’t what we wanted, but it’s all a learning curve at the end of the day,” Meek said. “We’re just going to build off this game.”
