In July 2008, a few Bainbridge residents, led by Julie Riely, started an organization devoted to the idea of building community through tennis, for free, on public courts. On Aug. 23-24, the organization, now known as Bainbridge Community Tennis Association, held its end-of-summer tournament on the public courts at Bainbridge High School and Sakai Park.
21 double teams played three, seven-game prosets, with two teams from each level advancing to the finals. In the finals for the 4.0-5.0 level were runners-up Edith Cobourn/Jason Joss and winners Keith Butler/Jason Flowers. For the 5.0-6.0 level, Tim Harris/Becky Hutt played winners Pablo Pizarro/AlexBlack. In the 6.0-7.0 group, Marc and Dominic Garcia played winners Mason Repp/Gabriel Garcia. For the 7.0-8.0 level runners-up Mark Alderson/Richard Alanza played winners Andrew and Fionn Block. And lastly, for the 8.0+ group, runners-up Alejandro Henao/Ben Devies played winners Garrett Little/Eric Dishinigton.
On Aug. 24, the association had its tournament dinner and silent auction at Wing Point Country Club. In addition to a meal and a celebration of the tennis community, the association raised over $3,000 to support summer junior tennis clinics. This year, BCTA sponsored two USTA Junior Tennis Teams and a junior clinic for over 30 young players using the proceeds from last year’s auction.
