St. Michael back online

More questions than answers still remain after St. Michael Medical Center officials have confirmed that most electronic systems are back online.

Virginia Mason Franciscan Health said in a statement Oct. 20 that MyChart among other electronic systems were being fully restored. The company confirmed that providers regained full access to patients’ health records, though online scheduling and the scheduling of canceled appointments due to the outage is still taking place.

The Silverdale hospital was handcuffed for weeks after VMFH announced its parent company, CommonSpirit Health System, was experiencing an IT-related security issue that was later confirmed to be a ransomware attack.

During the attack, doctors were locked out of access to patients’ medical records and online scheduling. Patients were also unable to access the online MyChart portal, which lets them access their own records. The hospital already was plagued by ongoing emergency room delays in the weeks leading up to the outage.

The hospital also announced interim director for the emergency department Mike Hastings left his position Oct. 19, though it is unclear why.

Kitsap residents will have the chance to have their questions heard by the president of St. Michael, Chad Melton, at the Nov. 2 Central Kitsap Community Council Meeting at Ridgetop Middle School in Silverdale.
