Austin Hall of Famer Gurf Morlix comes to the Treehouse

Gurf Morlix — who has produced iconic and award-winning albums for the likes of Lucinda Williams, Ray Wylie Hubbard and others — is on tour in support of a new release of his own, “Impossible Blue,” and will be playing an album release show at the Treehouse Café at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 4.

Born in Lackawanna, New York, at a formative age Morlix saw the Beatles on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” promptly formed a band (in which Peter Case made his stage debut), moved to Austin to escape the cold and play music and befriended Blaze Foley and a bunch of other Austin characters.

He moved to Los Angeles, worked for more than a decade as Lucinda Williams’ guitarist, bandleader and backing vocalist, produced her acclaimed “Sweet Old World,” then famously left Williams, toured with Warren Zevon and moved back to Austin to produce a number of classic Americana albums. He was eventually inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame.

Morlix moved on and became a freelance producer and since then has helmed projects by a diverse set of country and Americana artists, including Robert Earl Keen, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Ian McLagan, Slaid Cleaves and Mary Gauthier.
