Wesley Schulz will be stepping down as music director of Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra later this year, Bainbridge Performing Arts officials announced this week.

His final show with the island orchestra will be this November.

“Though this will be a sad day for us, it’s a tremendously exciting career move for Wes, as he has accepted the position of associate conductor of the renowned North Carolina Symphony,” BPA said in its announcement of Schulz’s departure.

Schulz will remain on board for the BSO’s November 2017 concert set, will host the 2018 Young Artist Competition on Dec. 6, and will serve as advisor for the BSO music director search, which will begin shortly, officials said.

Spring 2018 will see up to three guest conductor/finalists on the podium for the BSO conductor position. The programming that has already been announced will remain in place for the 2017-18 season.

“Wes has remarkable talent and presence; that we were graced with them for six wonderful seasons is a credit to the orchestra and to the island,” BPA executive director Dominique Cantwell said. “I look forward to watching his star continue to rise over North Carolina.”

Schulz himself thanked the musicians of the BSO in his official resignation notice.

“Without their talent, passion and dedication there would be no music,” he said. “This orchestra raised its profile as a performance group giving increasingly polished performances of a wide range of music. It has been my great pleasure to see their smiling faces each and every week as we work to put on a great show for our listeners.”
