Elyse S. Fischer of Bainbridge Island graduated from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, on June 22.
The new graduate received the United Kingdom equivalent of a bachelor of science degree in honors molecular biology. She follows in the footsteps of her grandfather, Dr. Edmond H. Fischer, professor emeritus of the University of Washington’s Department of Biochemistry and one of two UW biochemists to receive the 1992 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, along with Dr. Ed Krebs.
Elyse Fischer, a member of the Bainbridge High School Class of 2012, is the only one of three children and four grandchildren of Dr. Fischer to major in the biochemical sciences. Her honors dissertation, “Investigating pulsed electron-electron double resonance multi-spin effects in the Escherichia coli mechanosensitive channel of large-conductance,” received a “First,” the U.K. equivalent to an “A” grade in the U.S.
She is pursuing her major by working this coming year with Dr. Stephen Leppla, a supervising researcher for the National Institutes of Health, on anthrax as a possible tool to combat cancer, under an NIH one-year post-bacheloriate grant. She will be applying to doctoral programs in the U.K. and the U.S., to begin the following year.
