The Hood Canal Bridge has been shut down until further notice, the Washington State Department of Transportation announced Sunday, due to mechanical issues.

During an 8 a.m. marine opening Sunday, July 10, the Highway 104 span over Hood Canal experienced a mechanical malfunction on the west half of the bridge.

Department of Transportation bridge crews were trying to manually close the bridge Sunday morning, a process that could take several hours, officials said. Drivers should be prepared for long delays and consider alternate routes.
