Donations sought for Syrian refugees

Alice Mendoza traveled to Lesvos, Greece in February to help with the Syrian refugee crisis, inspired by the trip of a friend and the words of Eleanor Roosevelt.
Before and after her journey, she spoke to Betsy Garfunkel’s leadership class at Woodward Middle School. In response, the eighth-graders launched a school-wide clothing drive to raise money to support the Salaam Cultural Museum’s relief efforts in Indomeni and Jordan.
As donation piles accumulated, Garfunkel’s class decided to open the drive up to the wider island community. They have an ambitious collection goal: 10,000 pounds of clothing. Value Village pays 20 cents for every pound of clothing, which means with 10,000 pounds, the students can raise $2,000 for the center.
Stop by Woodward Middle School from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 9 with your donation. Household goods will also be accepted at this time. For information, contact Alice Mendoza at 360-908-1499.
