Christian Science Reading Room celebrates re-opening

The Christian Science Reading Room is looking good. The 350-square foot Winslow Way fixture underwent its first major renovation in 60 years. Construction work, which wrapped up last year, included a new roof, energy-efficient heating, air conditioning, electrical systems, windows and doors. Walls were demolished to the studs and the space was redesigned and refurbished.
Although the Reading Room re-opened for business last November, there were a number of punch list and decorative projects to be completed. Now, the members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Bainbridge Island, who own and operate the Reading Room, are looking forward to celebrating the completion of the project.
The grand re-opening celebration will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 19. Refreshments, music and tours will be provided, as well as a special video replay from 2 to 3:30 p.m. featuring John Hughes, the former editor of The Christian Science Monitor and a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist. In the video presentation, Hughes discusses and reads from his memoir about a career on the front lines of 20th century history.
Complimentary one-year subscriptions to The Christian Science Monitor (for new subscribers only) will be offered all day.
The Christian Science Reading Room is a quiet, welcoming space available for prayer and healing. It’s a bookstore and library, stocked with the Bible and books on the Bible, including “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,” the seminal work by the discoverer and founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. The Reading Room also carries music and inspirational CDs; Bible stories for children; weekly, monthly and quarterly Christian Science periodicals; and The Christian Science Monitor, an award-winning newsmagazine. Church members volunteer to staff the Reading Room, which is located at 295 Winslow Way.
