Best Bets for Jan. 29 - 31 | THE BAINBRIDGE BLAB

No need to blow the budget on this one. Free music, free movies, free book talks.

The Cherokee word for water is A-ma. Hopefully, that doesn’t spoil the eponymous movie, which screens at BIMA at 7 p.m. on Friday. Director Charlie Soap and producer Kristina Kiehl will be present to discuss their Port Townsend Film Festival offering about Wilma Mankiller, the first female leader of the Cherokee nation. Free tickets at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2488012.

On Saturday, you’ve got a party to attend. It’s pretty high-profile, what with the birthday boy being the “most creative jazz musician to originate anywhere outside the United States” – and that’s according to Duke Ellington. Ranger and the Re-Arrangers are your guide as you ring in what would be Django Reinhardt’s 106th year. Too bad he can’t join you at Treehouse Cafe (the legend passed in 1953). The show, which is free, starts at 8 p.m.

Books for lunch and afternoon tea at Eagle Harbor Book Company this Sunday. At noon, Jennifer Longo introduces “Up to this Pointe,” her young adult novel about an aspiring ballerina who heads to the Arctic. Bainbridge’s own Kristin von Kreisler follows at 3 p.m. with her tale of “Earnest” the yellow lab and his floundering florist-owner.

The Bainbridge Blab is your one-stop spot to get the 411 on all things 98110. From South Beach to Agate Passage, Battle Point to Rolling Bay, we’ve got the straight skinny on Bainbridge Island: the latest chatter, babble and burble. News, too.
