Julia Elizabeth Knight of Bainbridge Island and Matthew James Richards of Rumson, New Jersey were wed in San Francisco, California on Sept. 27, 2014 by the Honorable J. Robin Hunt, retired.

Guests were greeted by a bagpiper on the outdoor steps of the historic Bentley Reserve in San Francisco’s Financial District.

Bridal attendants in champagne-colored gowns included Bainbridge friends Maureen Elsberry and Jessica Nance, sisters Abigail Knight Arvanitidis and Eleanor Knight McGinley, and college friends Sarwat Digre and Nora Kim. Close friend and islander Dawn Elyse Bonker contributed a reading from Robert Fuhlgum during the ceremony.

Groomsmen in tuxes included Matt’s high school friends Brian Christian, Jason Ryterband and Grant Patterson, as well as the groom’s father, Edward Richards of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Ryterband and Patterson serenaded the couple a capella during the ceremony.

Julia’s parents, Larry C. Knight and Marianne Wiley of Bainbridge Island and grandmother Suzanne Calkins Wiley of Pleasant Lake, New York, joined guests in releasing silver streamers at the end of the ceremony; playing off of the event’s art deco theme. A front-row chair was held vacant in memoriam to the groom’s late mother, Lorraine A. Potts Richards.

The groom graduated from High Technology High School in Lincroft, New Jersey in 2002 and Stanford University in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and is a member of Tau Beta Pi. He is currently a software engineer at Upthere, a cloud storage company in Palo Alto.

The bride graduated from Bainbridge High School in 2002 and the George Washington University, cum laude, with a bachelor’s degree in economics. A former Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco, Julia is currently a vice president with the Global Banking and Markets Cash Management unit at HSBC in San Francisco.

The couple reside in San Francisco and have taken the names Matthew Knight Richards and Julia Knight Richards.

They will honeymoon in New Zealand and the Great Barrier Reef this winter.
