Island readies for frog invasion

Downtown Winslow is about to get froggy with it.
The Bainbridge Island Downtown Association is joining with island artists for a special frog-focused fundraiser this summer.
Large fiberglass frog sculptures will be painted by local artists and unveiled at Bainbridge’s Fourth of July celebration. The frogs will then be featured at locales around the island for one year. Frog finder maps will be available to visitors and others who want to take a frog-filled tour of the island.
After one year, the unique works of art will be auctioned off to benefit the downtown association.
The association is initially aiming for 25 frogs. Each sculpture will need a sponsor, who can choose their own artist and placement of the frog. Sponsorships are $1,000.
An informational workshop for sponsors will be held at the Winslow Art Center at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 18.
Once the frogs arrive at the May 18 farmers market in Winslow, artists will have six weeks to decorate their frogs before they are unveiled on July 4.
A website, www.frog
sontherock.org, has been set up to assist the promotion.
