Bloedel Reserve will host its first-ever Blues Mini-Fest starting at noon Sunday, Aug. 12.
This year’s “Ladies Play the Blues” Mini-Fest will feature three bands fronted by and featuring women.
The opening act is local favorite Julie Duke Band. Duke sings classic blues made famous by Etta James, Koko Taylor and Billie Holiday, with able back-up by drummer John Lester, guitarist Brian Barta, keyboardist Van Bergen and bass Steve Pearce.
Next up will be the West Coast Women’s Blues Revue, featuring guest artists, the legendary guitarist-singer-songwriter Alice Stuart, and guitarist Teri Anne Wilson. Stuart has been blazing trails in folk and blues since 1964, playing and recording with dozens of stars such as Mississippi John Hurt, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Jerry Garcia, Sonny Terry, Elvin Bishop and Frank Zappa. Wilson is the founder and leader of the Red Hot Blues Sisters, winner of the Washington Blues Society Best Band of 2009.
Lady A and the Baby Blues Funk Band will take the party up a notch with their special gumbo of gospel, blues and funk. Lady A is the leader of several bands based in Seattle and Portland.
Tickets are $30 ($25 for Bloedel Reserve members) and are available on line at Brown Paper Tickets, by calling Bloedel Reserve at 206-842-7631, or at the door on the day of the event.
