Robert Lewis is stepping down as principal of Ordway Elementary School.

Lewis announced his resignation in a letter to the community Wednesday afternoon.

He said his resignation would be effective July 1.

“Ordway is a very special school and I shall cherish the relationships that I’ve made with the students, parents and the Ordway community,” Lewis wrote.

“The strong value that the community places on education is a sustaining force in helping to support our students’ recognition of the importance of their education,” he added. “Thank you for your support of the school and me. I wish you all the best.”

Lewis was named to head Ordway in June 2008, becoming the school’s fourth principal. Before that, he was the principal at Millbrook Elementary Magnet School in Raleigh, N.C..

Bainbridge Island School Board President Patty Fielding said Lewis had hoped to return to North Carolina.

“It has a lot to do with family, and being closer to family,” Fielding said.
