Last Community Ride

The final Community Ride of the summer is Aug. 20, from 4-6 p.m.

Riders will meet at City Hall at 4 p.m. and head out for a casual, family-friendly ride to Eleven Winery on Day Road. This month’s route will include a mix of pavement and trail surfaces.

For a multi-modal experience, attendees can hitch a ride back into Winslow on Kitsap Transit Route 390 or 391.

Dance performances

Achillea Dance Theater of Bainbridge Island is holding performances at Bloedel Reserve Aug. 29.

The first performance is at 11 a.m., and the other one is at 2 p.m. Admission to the reserve is your ticket to the performance.

“Spend an afternoon with Achillea Dance Theater as they move through the reserve performing their newest site-specific work. This is a unique opportunity to experience contemporary dance existing outside of the theater space. Feel free to follow along with the company or stumble upon them as they move through the space. There are many ways to experience this work,” a news release says.

Human services funding

The City of Bainbridge Island is seeking proposals to provide funding for local nonprofit organizations to support human services projects in the community during the 2027-2028 funding cycle. A total of $660,000 is available for distribution through a two-year funding cycle.

Human services are defined as those services that assist people in meeting the essential life needs of food, clothing, shelter, and access to health care, a news release says. Applicants can apply for awards ranging from a minimum of $10,000 to a maximum of $165,000, and funds must be used to support activities during 2025 and 2026.

Commission opening

COBI seeks volunteers to apply to serve on the Civil Service Commission.

The commission is charged with ensuring hiring examination processes for the police department are open and competitive at entry and promotional levels. The commission adopts rules and regulations for the police department‘s civil service employees. The commission also handles any appeals related to testing and to those involving employee discipline, per a news release.

Commissioners serve three-year terms and are appointed by the city manager. There is one open position. Deadline for applications is 11:59 p.m., Sept. 20.

Mental health workshop

Bainbridge Youth Services is partnering with Dr. Janis Whitlock, PhD, MPH, Research Scientist Emerita at Cornell University and a nationally recognized expert on youth mental health and non-suicidal self-injury, to develop a specially designed educational workshop for local youth this fall.

This interactive workshop will help youth better understand self-injury and recognize when a friend may be struggling. Youth will gain practical tools and greater confidence in caring for their own well-being and responding compassionately when someone they know may be struggling, per a news release.
