It is so easy to forget the troubles of the world when one lives on this idyllic island. It is easy to ignore and be oblivious.

However, one of the troubles striking close to home: thousands of animals in the state are homeless.

Every year many of these cats and dogs are being euthanized because the shelters run out of space to keep them any longer.

Many wonderful pets are sitting in cages waiting for someone to adopt them and give them a home. It’s heartbreaking.

Before considering getting a cat or dog from a breeder or, heaven forbid, a puppy mill, please check out Petfinder.org.

Most local shelters and rescue organizations have listed their pets up for adoption on this website. There are thousands of animals listed and many of them are purebreds and puppies.

So, before you buy an expensive purebred dog from a breeder, check out this website.

I guarantee you that there is one on there you will like, and you may end up saving a life.
