More islanders will benefit from WSF’s land lease | Letters | Oct. 1

The two most important things to realize about the city’s (that’s all of us who live on Bainbridge Island) rights to waterfront land in Eagle Harbor are:
1. They aren’t making any more land – once gone, gone forever.
2. The $2 million the ferry system is offering for us to give up those rights forever can only be used for waterfront projects.
So, the money cannot be used to bail us out of our other financial difficulties, and the land in question can and should be used for waterfront projects.
There are any number of small businesses that employ people and pay taxes that are wanting and needing such land for their free enterprise.
We (COBI) can profit on sub-letting the land and still have waterfront sitting and walking places. This scenario benefits all islanders equally.
The suggested alternative to keeping this valuable land is to build more moorage for tourists, which benefits – hmmm – the tourists.
Which in turn, would benefit the boutiques and restaurants they shop in (nothing personal against the boutiques and restaurants), primarily during the summer months.
Let’s keep the waterfront land and use it for the benefit of all islanders.
