Marina’s new art will light up area | Letters | July 30

I was sorry to be lateand miss the resounding applause of more than 100 people who attended the well-publicized unveiling ceremony for the stunning new public art work on Marina Square at the foot of Madison Avenue. The air hummed with praise.

Susan Jackson, manager of Bainbridge Arts and Crafts, had just delivered an inspiring tribute to the artist and team who had designed this intricate “Pod,” a network of woven sheet metal strips that became a giant plant form. Children who had just made little seed pods of clay and compost were climbing all over the bench seat when I arrived.

This art piece had been in the hopper since 2006 when it was commissioned, under the auspices of 2 percent for capital projects, as part of the Waterfront Park bathroom. When the bathroom was delayed, the art element moved to Marina Square where the nondescript viewscape was transformed by new landscaping.

With the addition soon of interior lighting for night time glow in the Pod, this plaza will thrive on a new element of creative inspiration. Do bring your family down to enjoy it.
