Bainbridge Island Rotary Club recently awarded a $20,000 community grant to the Earth Services Corps club at Bainbridge High School.

The Earth Services Club provides learning opportunities to the Bainbridge community that raises awareness and improves our environment.

Student members discovered that 30 percent of the trash collected from the BHS campus consisted of food waste.

The Rotary funds along with additional grants given to the Bainbridge Island School District will be used to purchase and install an Earth Bin, which is a high-tech composter designed and built by Green Mountain Technologies of Bainbridge.

When fully operational, the bin will save the district more than $1,000 monthly in trash removal costs.

Earth Services Corps is also offering home composters at a discounted price, as a fundraiser for an organic garden. See the high school’s website for more information.
