Island symbols of peace deserve some time off | Letters, Jan. 16

Now that Barack Obama is being sworn in as president next Tuesday, do you think it would be okay if the Women in Black took a little time off?

For nearly eight years, the Women in Black, God bless ‘em, have been standing vigil every Friday evening, rain or shine or snow or sleet, in protest of murderous Bush administration policies.

Their candles burning in the dark have been like tiny timeless beacons of hope, reason and compassion. Their presence has never failed to stir my conscience. I am proud and thankful for what they have done.

But dontcha think maybe some Men in White could carry the torch for a while and let these good women take a well-deserved break?
