Golfers open season with win

Austin Hurt claims match medalist honors with par over nine holes.
Junior Austin Hurt shot par over nine holes Monday, leading the Spartan golfers to a season-opening win at Wing Point.
Hurt carded a 35, shooting a bogie on the hilly fourth hole, a birdie on No. 7, and par the rest of the way to earn match medalist honors.
Teammates Paul DeBarros, a junior, and sophomore Jamie Neill carded 39s, while sophomore David Botefuhr and senior Hans Olson both shot 40.
Those rounds gave Bainbridge a 95 for the afternoon in the high-score-wins Stableford system, securing the victory over Eastside Catholic (88) annd Seattle Prep’s (81). A team’s best four cards from the five-member team are counted toward the team score.
The match was played under ideal conditions, as autumn brought its more desirable elements to oversee the afternoon.
“A beautiful sunny day on bucolic Bainbridge Island,” said coach Bob Dwyer, who took over the boys program this year after several years as girls coach.
Other top scorers were Eastside’s Tim Ganhal (37) and Garrett Miller (39). No other golfers shot under 40 on the day.
It was the season’s first action for the defending Metro League and District 2 champions and state runners-up. Dwyer cited Botefuhr’s fine round in the sophomore’s first varsity match.
The Bainbridge girls also opened play yesterday afternoon at Wing Point.
Both teams travel to the Jefferson Municipal Course today and Thursday, then return to Wing Point next week. Bainbridge will host matches at Wing Point at 3 p.m. every Monday and Tuesday afternoon through Oct. 13.
