Senior finishes with a personal best on home turf.

The only time any other runner was close to Emily Farrar was at the starting line.

The senior co-captain quickly distanced herself from the pack and won easily with a time of 19 minutes as the Bainbridge girls cross country team took second at their only home meet of the year Wednesday at Battle Point Park.

The time is her personal best on a 5-kilometer (3.1 mile) course.

“It felt great,” she said. “It felt really good.

“I was a little worried ‘cause there wasn’t anyone there so I was worried that it might feel fast but it would be off, but it felt really good.”

The Spartans also got strong performances by Hayley Trageser, who finished third with a time of 20:11 and Annie Taylor, who took fifth with a time of 20:37.

“I am so proud of how they’re coming (along),” Farrar said. “They drag everyone else along with them.”

Both Trageser and Taylor kept the pace set by Farrar and kept right with Bishop Blanchet’s top runners in Bridgit Toulouse and Margaux Barlag-Welling, who took second and fourth with times of 20:10 and 20:14, respectively.

After Taylor’s finish, there wasn’t another runner that crossed the line until Braves runner Leah Swanson did it at 21:17.

Zoe Worthington placed 16th with a time of 21:56, while Molly O’Keefe finished 20th with a time of 22:37, with Jamie Huggler right behind her at 22:41.

Rebecca Sharar placed 28th with a time of 23:17.

On the boys’ side, Ian Shiach was the top finisher for the Spartans at fifth place with a time of 17:07.

Max Welch was eighth with a time of 17:20, while Willy Wenzlau placed 13th with a time of 17:51.

Matt Tetlow was 15th with a time of 17:59, while Ryan Vogel was 18th with a time of 18:10.

Josh Larkin was 21st with a time of 18:22, while Dan Thacker was 23rd with a time of 18:36.

The first five runners all finished within 1:03 of each other as Bainbridge took second to Blanchet.

Both teams take part in the Ft. Warden Invitational today, then run in the last league meet of the season next week at Lincoln Park in Seattle.

The Metro League championship meet is Oct. 17 at the same location.

Golfers drop one to O’Dea

The Bainbridge boys golf team knew they were in for a fight with arch-rival and one of the favorites to win state in O’Dea coming to Wing Point.

The Fighting Irish left with a 107-103 win Tuesday, the first time anyone has won on the Spartans’ home course in many years.

Spartan head coach Bob Dwyer said he estimates the streak has been going before he arrived at the school, but he won’t get too upset about the loss.

“We’ve had a pretty good streak,” he said. “But these O’Dea kids have played here four times and they’ve improved.

“They’re solid golfers but so are we,” Dwyer continued. “It’s just a matter of who gets the putts (to drop) and who doesn’t.”

Cory Mehl was the medalist for the match as he shot a three-under 32.

Sandy Vaughan followed with a one-under 34, while Tyler Kato shot an even 35.

For Bainbridge, Kyle Hurt kept right with Mehl by shooting a two-under 33.

Sean Leonard turned in a two-over 37, while Carl Jonson carded a 35.

Kyle Leonard turned in a 40 and Kyle Schneider had a 43, while their sixth golfer, Bobby Griffin shot a 35, but they couldn’t use his score as they take the top five golfers.

Against West Seattle on Monday, Sean was the medalist with an even-par 37.

Griffin was second with a 40, while Will de van der Schueren had a 41 and Kyle carded a 42 as the Spartans beat the Wildcats.

Bainbridge hosts Eastside Catholic next Tuesday and Bishop Blanchet next Wednesday.

Kickers lose to Seattle Prep

The Bainbridge girls soccer team got on the board first, but couldn’t hang onto the lead, losing 4-1 to Seattle Prep Tuesday at home.

After a scoreless first half, Kelsey Thompson scored in the 48th minute when she got a nice slant pass from Kristen Saksa and put it in the side of the goal.

But the Panthers responded with four unanswered scores, starting in the 49th minute when Emily Eckmann scored off an assist from Rachelle Ollee.

Druker said they had more shots in the first half but couldn’t score.

“(We) played a solid game but Prep finished when they had the opportunities,” he said.

Bainbridge plays Ingraham next Tuesday at Ingraham.
