Speedy Spartans notch state times against HNA, Port Angeles

The Spartans strung together back-to-back home wins against Holy Names Academy and Port Angeles last week in girls varsity swimming & diving.

The big wins set the stage for Senior Night, the Spartans’ last home meet of the season, on Friday, Oct. 18 at the Bainbridge Aquatic Center.

Bainbridge eclipsed HNA 119-66.

The Spartans won 10 of 11 races, and also finished first in 1-meter diving. In five races against the Cougars, Spartan swimmers notched state-qualifying times for this year’s 3A championships in Federal Way.

The fantastic foursome of Eden Michael, Emma Solseng, Moorea Eldon-Everts and Xaveria Rodriguez won the first race of the meet, the 200-yard medley relay, with a state qualifying time of 1:54.95. The 3A state mark is 1:56.00.

Margaret Hayes claimed first place for Bainbridge in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.70. The 3A state qualifying time in the event is 1:59.50.

Also headed to state in another race: Solseng, who won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:12.53. The 3A state qualifying time is 2:13.50.

In other wins, Rodriguez was first in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.25. She was also first in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing in 55.69.

Bryn Tiernan won the 1-meter diving event, with a finals score of 195.25.

The relay team of Hayes, Solseng, Annalisia Tuinukuafe and Rodriguez claimed first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a state time of 1:43.30.

Solseng also was first in the 100-yard breaststroke, with a state time of 1:07.74.

Hayes also won the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 1:01.79.

The Spartans went one-two-three in the race, with Naomi Howard taking second place (1:06.04) and Grace Pratt claiming third place (1:11.95).

Bainbridge rounded out the meet with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The team of Michael, Eldon-Everts, Howard and Hayes raced to first place in 3:54.28.

In action earlier this week against Port Angeles, the Spartans’ deep bench carried Bainbridge to a lopsided 127-56 win.

BHS won nine of 11 races as well as the diving event.

Hayes had another state-worthy finish in the 500-yard freestyle, winning first place in 5:07.45. The state qualifying time in the event is 5:20.70.

Spartan Coach Sarah Bullock said man of the Spartans posted seasonal best times against HNA, and Hayes set another pool record in the 200-yard freestyle.

Bullock said Tuinukuafe, Tiernan and Eldon-Everts qualified for the state championships with top performances in their events against the Cougars.
