Spartans settle at 3-3 in varsity football

The Bainbridge High School varsity football team suffered a 54-42 loss on the road against the Sedro-Woolley Cubs Friday, Oct. 5.

The 54-42 non-conference defeat dropped the Spartan season record to 3-3, and gave the Cubs their first win of the year (1-3).

Sedro-Woolley led in the game’s opening quarter (21-6), but BHS ramped up in the second (22-13) and entered the second half only slightly behind (34-28).

The third stanza was a tie, scoring-wise (7-7), but the Cubs conquered withb a 13-7 final quarter and maintained their lead to the buzzer.

Still, the night was not without some stellar Spartan performances, especially from Gannon Winker and Max McLeod.

Winker passed for 420 yards in the contest, completing 21-of-33 attempts, and scored four touchdowns. He rushed for 72 yards and two more touchdowns.

McLeod carried the ball 34 yards in nine attempts. He finished the night with 279 yards (with eight receptions), and four touchdowns scored.

Defensiely, Tyler Pickett led the day with six tackles and two assists for the Spartans.

Ryan Wilson also managed six tackles, plus one assist.

Winker chipped in five tackles and one assist, and Elliot Weaver scored four tackles and one assist.

BHS has just two games left on the regular season calendar: on the road Friday, Oct. 12 against Franklin, and a final return home, the Homecoming and Senior Night game, at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 against West Seattle.
