Spartans qualify to play at District

The Bainbridge Spartan girls volleyball team muzzled the Garfield Bulldogs 3-0 in the first round of the Metro League Volleyball Tournament to advance to a meeting with Seattle Prep later this week.

The Spartans won in straight sets against Garfield Tuesday at Garfield High.

The crucial win in the loser-out matchup against the Bulldogs advanced Bainbridge to the second round Thursday, and a battle on Prep’s home court at McHugh Gymnasium. It was also a gutty upset victory and sweet revenge times two for the Spartans, who lost 3-1 to the Bulldogs at home earlier this season. Garfield also ended Bainbridge’s post-season run in the Metro Tournament last year.

Win or lose, the Spartans will continue on to Nov. 9 game and, at worst, an eighth-place finish in the Metro torney.

The initial round win guarantees Bainbridge will advance in the playoffs to the SeaKing District Tournament — a preseason goal for the Spartan squad.
