Spartans power into lacrosse playoffs with 11-3 record

On paper, last Friday’s boys lacrosse game with Curtis looked like an intriguing matchup.

Both teams came into the game with 9-2 records, and the outcome would likely decide third place and a game against Issaquah in the semifinals rather than with undefeated Mercer Island, the Division 1 leader.

In addition, the Vikings boasted midfielder Landon Carr, the first state player to be named to the Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic (with teams comprised largely of East Coast players, especially from New York, New Jersey and Maryland). Carr, the league’s second-leading scorer, has committed to play for the University of Maryland.

The Spartans wasted little time shredding the paper, leading by 15 points before settling for a 19-9 win.

Bjorn Ostenson scored just over a minute into the game, and Cameron Parker followed less than a minute later. Carr assisted on a goal at the 8:40 mark to narrow the score 2-1. It would be about the only offensive noise he would make all night, and the Vikings followed his lead in the opening half as the Spartans scored seemingly at will while snuffing the Curtis offense.

Sam Snow scored at 7:58, Sam Deery-Schmitt at 7:14 and Kevin Nguyen picked off an attempted goalie clearing shot at 6:04 for an easy score and the beginning of a huge night.

Ostenson and Nguyen notched their second goals at 3:11 and 2:23, respectively, and Bainbridge scored twice in seven seconds in the final minute. After Snow’s score with 38 seconds remaining, Nguyen shot straight downfield from the faceoff and made the score 9-1.

The Bainbridge scoring pace slacked off at the start of the second quarter. Snow made the score 13-1 at 8:50, Nguyen followed a minute later, it was Snow again at 7:06 and then at 3:34, and Hguyen for the fifth time at 1:45.

Once again Bainbridge took advantage of the waning moments of the quarter, with Nguyen feeding Parker for a score with 22 seconds showing and then Dugan McDermott firing a laser to Jordan Wagner at the side of the net for an easy score as time expired.

The second half opened with the lacrosse equivalent of the mercy rule in sports such as softball and baseball: a running clock. Curtis scored twice within the first minute to open the third quarter, but the Vikings were stymied for the rest of the quarter. Wagner and Nguyen each scored later in the period to make the score 18-3 as the fourth quarter opened.

With Bainbridge substituting freely in the final 12 minutes, Curtis racked up six goals to make the final score somewhat respectable. Nguyen fed Snow for the final Bainbridge score. The assist, the third of the evening for Nguyen, gave him a total of nine points for the night. Snow had seven on six goals and an assist.

“It’s crazy,” Nguyen said of his best-ever game in terms of points. “I felt that I could score or set up my teammates every time I had the ball.

“We came out strong and never let up. We wanted to be the team we know we can be. We know that no one can run with us.”

“We played to our full potential,” McDermott added. “We went into the game relaxed and confident.”

Assistant coach Dejon Hush said : “We’re peaking at the right time. We’re running on all cylinders. Tonight was a good glimpse of what we can do. In other games we’ve practiced well and come out flat. We wanted to come out and put in two-three solid minutes right away.”

He also noted that Carr’s well-publicized Under Armour selection was a factor. “We wanted to prove that our guys were as good,” he said. “We wanted to put our best defender [McDermott] on him and see who won.”

Things were considerably different the following evening as Bainbridge hosted Lincoln of Portland, last year’s Oregon state champs. After losing 13-12 the previous night to Mercer Island, Lincoln defeated the Spartans 14-9. Alex Crane led Bainbridge with three goals.

And the team ended the regular season on Tuesday by edging visiting Skyline 10-9 after trailing for much of the game. One factor in the closeness of the final score was Skyline’s ability to win the faceoffs and provide itself with numerous scoring opportunities.

Snow scored four goals, while Nguyen, Henry Deery-Schmitt, Sam Deery-Schmitt, McDermott, Ostenson and Parker all scored once.

Next up for Bainbridge is hosting the first round of the Division 1 playoffs. The Spartans will face a team to be determined — probably Bellevue or Northshore — next Thursday or Friday.
