Spartans begin season with win on road

Bainbridge swatted Cleveland as both Spartan tennis teams opened the 2019 varsity season at Cleveland High Wednesday.

Sunny skies greeted the Spartans; the matches had been earlier been scheduled for Tuesday but were postponed due to the weather.

Head Varsity Tennis Coach Jennifer Anne Shorr said it was an excellent day for both squads: The BHS boys team swept Cleveland match 5-0, and the Spartan girls also played great tennis, with a 4-1 victory.

Shorr said Bainbridge notched solid singles wins for both Oscar Bray (who had a scrap that ended in a third set super tiebreaker 6-7, 7-5, 10-8) and Asher Van Slyke (the winner in straight sets) along with Catherine Rolfes.

In girls No. 1 play, Madison Culp fought hard against an experienced all-court player and nearly escaped with a win.

Girls winners for Bainbridge were: Jillian Albullarade/Jessica Pecunies, Lindsay Payne/Paige Tomer, and Nicole Houmes/Lena Klinkenberg.

The boys winners: Ryan Wilson/John Tappan, Bjorn Stanley/Liam Welch, and Elliott Weyland/Sean Westerhout.

The Spartans will play in their regular season home opener against Lakeside Tuesday.
