Everyone placed where they were seeded or even beyond, so they rose to the level of competition.Becca Ivey and Alice Russell won individual championships for the girls, Ivey taking the 400 in 60.0 while Russell threw a season-best 106-11 to win the discus. Russell also was third in the shot at 32-5. Ivey came back 20 minutes after finishing the 400 to place second in the 800 in 2:25.2. She also ran a leg on the 4×400 relay team for a total of five races (including prelims) in two days in addition to taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test on Saturday morning. Crisma Biggs matched the winning long jump with a leap of 16-2 1/2, but placed second on the basis of second-best jumps.I’m happy to get back to where I was last year, Biggs said. I wasn’t really focused on the long jump. I’ve focused on hurdles and everything but the long jump. It kind of surprised me.Joe Mankes had perhaps the best overall Spartan mark, winning the triple jump at 43-3 1/2 on his final effort. That was the best jump I’ve done this year, said Mankes, who was third in the high jump at 6-0. It’s good for my ego to win here today. I thought about all those times I almost made it that I’ve come up short. The 4×400 relay edged Bremerton for first, 3:30.7 to 3:31.0, for the boys’ only other first place as Luke Preble made up more than 10 yards on the final lap.Other Spartans placing in the top three:* Evan Galloway, 3200, 3rd in 9:56.0.* Boys 4×100 relay, 3rd, 45.2.* Preble, 200, 3rd, 22.9 and 400, 2nd, 50.5.* Tim Freeman, 400, 3rd, 51.8.* Jarred Hinton, discus, 3rd, 123-2.* Melissa Borgen, 100 hurdles, 3rd, 16.6.* Laura Bartunek, high jump, 3rd, 4-10.* Veronica Ivey, 400, 2nd, 61.1.Friday’s home dual meet against Sequim will determine qualifiers for the following week’s district championships at North Mason. “
