Raymundo hits home run in win

The Spartans pulled away from Ballard with a big four-run fourth inning to forge a 14-4 win over the Beavers in girls varsity fastpitch softball last week at Lower Woodland Park in Seattle.

Bainbridge got off to a quick start in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs on singles by Ruby Raymundo, Malia Peato, and Anna Kozlosky, a ground out by Miranda Grogger that moved runners up.

Grace Colburn closed out the scoring with a single to left center that brought home Elise Woods (running for Peato) and Kozlosky.

Ballard tied the score in the third. Bainbridge errors put the first two runners on, and three consecutive singles resulted in three runs.

Bainbridge responded with three runs in the top of the fourth.

A walk by Lillian McDonald, followed by singles from Raymundo and Abby Sullivan loaded the bases.

Peato then brought a run home with a ground out. Kozlosky followed with a two-out triple to score the final two runs of the inning.

The Spartans put the game out of reach in the fifth, scoring four runs. The highlight was a massive two-run homer by Raymundo. One witness estimated that Raymundo’s blast traveled 225 feet and hit the very top of a 12- to 15-foot high fence.

After surrendering a run to Ballard in the sixth, the Spartans closed the scoring with four in the seventh. Two run singles by Colburn and Hayden Jobes brought the final to 14-4.

Besides her heroics at the plate, Raymundo was stellar behind the plate, throwing out Ballard runners trying to steal.

She also blocked a potential wild pitch (on swinging strike three), tripped over the bat and recovered her footing to make a perfect throw to first to get the runner.

Peato picked up another win for BHS in the circle (5-3). She pitched seven innings (8 H, 1 ER, 6 Ks, 2 BB).

Raymundo finished 4-for-6, with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored.

Peato was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.

Kozlosky went 3-for-4, with a triple, three RBIs and two runs.

Colburn finished 4-for-5, with four RBIs and two runs.

Jobes went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run.

The win set the Spartans’ season record at 7-3 (7-2 in Metro).
