Both teams struggle in quest for Metro titles. BEACON HILL, SEATTLE – It was a day that quickly turned into a “sisyphistic challenge” as Bob Dwyer put it.
For the Bainbridge boys’ and girls’ golf teams, they couldn’t have had a harder time if they spent the day rolling golf balls uphill with their hands as they struggled with horrible weather conditions at the Metro League championship tournament at Jefferson Golf Course on Beacon Hill in Seattle Thursday.
As season winds down, Spartans ready for the postseason. With the season coming to a close, the Bainbridge girls’ swim and dive team are starting to turn their focus toward the postseason.
They lost to Newport 98-88 on Tuesday, but rebounded to defeat Mt. Rainier on Friday.
Head coach Greg Colby said the team has been swimming better as of late.

Cobb runs for 170 yards as defense comes up big all game long. On Senior Night, the Bainbridge football team got a big performance from a junior – running back Ross Cobb – to help the Spartans defeat the Seattle Prep Panthers 21-7 Thursday night in front of a good-sized crowd.
Fifteen seniors from the football team and several from the cheerleading squad were honored in a pre-game ceremony.
“I didn’t really start to feel it until right at the start, but once you got all those emotions out and meet your parents, it felt good to be out there,” senior co-captain Mike Walsh said.
Too many mistakes doom Spartans in loss to arch-rival. It’s never a good thing to be swept by your arch-rival on your home turf.
But even though the Bainbridge volleyball team lost to the defending 3A state champs Bishop Blanchet in three games by the scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-19, both head coach Julie Miller and the players felt their effort was better than in games past.
“They’re on the verge of being a really good team,” Miller said.
Gilbreath returns, scores three touchdowns in the first half. After two tough games back-to-back, the Bainbridge football team got a bit of a breather with an undermanned Lakeside team coming to the island.
But head coach Andy Grimm wasn’t taking them lightly.
“I really like their team,” he said. “I knew they would come out and play hard. They hung with (Seattle) Prep, so that told me if we weren’t ready to play, they would give us trouble.”
The Spartans kept that from happening as Dayton Gilbreath rushed for 112 yards and scored three times – all in the first half – as the Spartans defeated the Lions 35-7 in the annual Homecoming game.
