Old-timers return to field in July 4 Stars and Strikes game

The “old-timers” are going to hit the diamond once again this year, and this time they’re the stars of the Fourth of July weekend.

With Bainbridge Island celebrating the holiday a little differently this year, the 16th annual Stars and Strikes baseball game, featuring former Bainbridge Little League, high school, and select players and coaches, will take place at noon July 4 at Bainbridge High School. Typically, the game is played earlier to allow folks to enjoy the rest of the island’s festivities.

The old-timer’s game has become an annual tradition and an important fundraiser for the BHS baseball team. The game is free, but donations are accepted.

“It’s been really fun the last few years,” said Gregg Mesmer, a longtime coach on Bainbridge who helps wrangle in the baseball talent. “We’ve had a lot of good defensive plays, some really good pitching.”
