The Kingston Buccaneers took on the Olympic Trojans Sept. 15 and swept them 3-0.

Olympic took an early 6-1 lead after a couple of aces from Serene Gonzalez. But Kingston responded with a handful of aces as well, going ahead 11-10. The teams fought tooth and nail for each point after that as neither one led by more than two points for the rest of the set.

Kingston’s offense came through outside hitters Grace Mosco and Sophia Call in the first set. In addition, the rest of the squad tallied a handful of aces to allow Kingston to gain a 20-19 lead. Olympic responded when Gonzalez racked up her third and fourth aces of the day, putting the visitors ahead 23-21.

On the verge of losing the set, Kingston responded with a handful of points to push it to a tiebreaker. Once the two squads were tied at 25, Kingston’s offense began to click, winning the first set 27-25.

The two teams locked up at 4-4 in the second set before Kingston began to swing the momentum in its favor. The Bucs were able to capitalize on several long rallies because of their variety of options on the offensive spectrum. Besides Call and Mosco, Brooke Steele picked up a few kills. Kingston earned a 14-7 lead before Olympic coach Keith Peden called a timeout.

Afterward, Olympic’s defense held up while Cassidy Cortez helped the Trojans cut the score to 19-17 with a handful of kills from the middle of the court. But Kingston again was strong at the end of that set, winning 25-18.

Olympic looked drained in the third set and Kingston took advantage. The Bucs apitalized on all angles, taking a 13-4 lead. Olympic responded with short spurts but could not maintain a long successful run. Kingston swept Olympic off the court by winning the third set 25-10.

Serene Gonzalez was Olympic’s star player after earning several aces for her squad.

Grace Mosco and Brooke Steele were a dynamic duo on the offensive side for Kingston.

Olympic’s Cassidy Cortez attempted to keep the Trojans alive with her kills.
