Island team wrestles with middling finale

The Bainbridge High School varsity wrestling team saw a less-than-stellar final outing cap their regular season schedule Thursday, Jan. 24 at Ingraham High.

Against Nathan Hale the Spartans tied, 36-36, and against the host school they were bested 65-15.

It was the final match of the season, as the Metro Championships are slated to begin Friday, Feb. 1 at Cleveland High School.

The regional championships will take place Saturday, Feb. 9 at Nathan Hale, and the state championship tournament will take place once again at the Tacoma Dome Friday, Feb. 15 and Saturday, Feb. 16.

Against Nathan Hale, the Spartans and Raiders both snagged four forfeit wins, while double forfeits negated the 132- and 285-pound brackets.

On the mat, Hale’s Hamza Echari (113-pounds) pinned Garrett Swanson in 1:29, while Corrine Harris (160) pinned Caroline Michaels in 38 seconds.

Bainbridge scored two speedy wins.

First, Hiram Topham (120) pinned Sam Kernfeld in 40 seconds, then Oleg Maguire (138) pinned Ayden Damman in 28 seconds.

Against Ingraham, BHS scored no forfeit wins, though the Rams racked up six.

The Spartans claimed three victories on the mat: Indigo Weappa (126) won a flawless 7-0 decision against Keenan Lauder; Oleg Maguire (138) pinned Diego Enriquez in 47 seconds; and Doug Takada (145) pinned Connor Richardson in 5:46.

Otherwise, it was a Raider’s show all the way.

Solomon Dowider (106) pinned Harrison Cate in 57 seconds; Christian Bailey (113) pinned Garrett Swanson in 1:39; David Urcino (120) pinned Hiram Topham in 4:40; Simion Mayo (160) pinned Caroline Michaels in just 11 seconds; and Tre Herstad (195) pinned Tyler Pickett in 4:46.
