Island sailing teams rock early season regattas

Sailors from the Bainbridge High School sailing team competed in regattas in two separate locations on Saturday, March 23 and Sunday, March 24.

A team of five competed in a varsity-level ranking regatta at Oak Harbor, held to determine eligible teams for sailing in the NWISA Fleet Racing Championship to be held later this spring.

Winds were reportedly light to non-existent and considerable time was spent waiting for the weather to cooperate.

In addition, when there was wind it was “shifty and tricky,” officials said.

BHS sailors Zach Cooper, Dane Petrakis, Lindsay Campbell, Chase Van Derrick and Gus Beer earned a fifth-place finish out of teams from 20 schools and successfully ensured the BHS team a berth in the later NWISA Fleet Racing Championship.

Other BHS sailors competed as three separate teams at the Central Kitsap Regatta on Dyes Inlet in Silverdale.

In official results, Bainbridge teams finished first, third and sixth among a roster of 13 schools.

It was, officials noted, a very strong showing.

Sailing for Bainbridge in first place were Banning Jones, Barrett Lhamon, Lola White, and Trevor Royset.

The third-place team was Gianna Dewey, Evan Young, Garrett Guse, and Thomas McNulty.

The sixth-place team was made up of Zane Walker and Jack Turkovich with two sailors from Seattle.

Among the best scores of the weekend were those of skipper Zane Walker with crew Jack Turkovich and skipper Barrett Lhamon, who ended up first and second in the B Division.

“These good scores from the CK Regatta indicate the rapid skill development among the younger sailors on the team and promise an exciting future,” said BHS Head Coach Susan Kaesler.
