The CrossFit fitness program has been sweeping the country, gaining in popularity and winning over new converts along the way. For those curious about the program, but unsure if it is the right routine for them, the Bainbridge-based gym CrossFit Outcome is offering “On-Ramp” beginner classes through the month of September.

“Simply put, CrossFit is constantly varied, functional movements performed at varying levels of intensity to suit the needs of the person performing the workout,” said Sal DeRosalia, CrossFit Outcome owner and trainer.

“The constantly varied part means CrossFit workouts are different daily by design,” he explained. “It means switching up when you do legs, back, arms, chest and cardio and not following the same routine so your body and mind don’t get used to that same routine.”

As to the popularity of the program, DeRosalia said it’s not hard to understand why CrossFit is such a hit.

“CrossFit is popular because it works,” he said. “CrossFit is about working through difficult things to get results that can’t be produced by taking the easy way out. CrossFit is about working through that stuff with a community of people who are doing the same thing.”

For those who may be curious, but hesitant to try a routine rumored to be so intense, DeRosalia is quick to dispel the elitist myth surrounding the program.

“When you walk into CrossFit Outcome, you will see mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, lawyers, teachers, bakers and bankers,” he said. “They all work out here, they all support and encourage one another and they all see results. Some people would like to claim CrossFit is just a fad and will eventually go away, but people have been running, jumping, pushing, pulling and squatting since the beginning of time. I don’t think it’s going anywhere.”

DeRosalia also recommends CrossFit for people who may be looking for a way to get back in shape again.

“We have people coming off knee replacement,” he said. “We have mothers who gave birth six weeks ago and were on bed rest for six months. CrossFit is built around being modifiable.”

“All kinds of people enjoy CrossFit,” DeRosalia said. “Anyone who is looking to get a good workout in, be surrounded by a great community of people and have a great time in the process. We have people who have worked out their whole life and people who have never worked out a day in their life before starting CrossFit that love it the same.”

CrossFit Outcome is located at 9463 NE Business Park Lane.
