Bulldogs outlast Sparty in Metro League opener

Garfield fought off a spirited Spartan comeback to prevail 3-1 late last week in girls varsity volleyball.

The Bulldogs jumped to a 7-0 advantage in the first set and held on to win 25-9. Bainbridge bounced back to win the second set 25-21, but Garfield nabbed a close win in the third, 25-19, then narrowly escaped with a fourth set victory, 27-25.

Spartan Coach Dominique Atherley said her team started to find its momentum last week, which started with a 3-0 win over Franklin before the loss at home to the Bulldogs.

“The offense run by Paige Bouma and Julia Jakubik started to find a rhythm with Allie Wildsmith and Julia Jakubik being major contributors. The team also found how to bounce back and create their own energy after a rough start against Garfield,” Atherley noted.

Jakubik finished with four aces and 12 kills. Wildsmith contributed 10 kills, two blocks and four digs.

Rebecca Roman added 20 assists, eight digs, four kills, one block and one ace for the Spartans. Lauren De Gall finished with 20 digs and two kills, and Bouma had five kills, 12 assists and seven digs.
