VANCOUVER – Thirty rowers and coxswains from Bainbridge Island Rowing competed in the 2014 US Rowing Northwest Masters Regional Championships held last Friday through Sunday at Vancouver Lake near Vancouver, Washington, medaling in nine of the 19 events they entered.

BIR’s 17 women and 13 men, ranging in age from 38 to 80, rowed in six sculling and 13 sweep events, bringing home four gold, two silver, and three bronze medals.

The Masters Regionals drew nearly a thousand athletes from 49 rowing clubs, mainly from Washington, Oregon, California, and British Columbia, but with a few from Colorado, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and New York as well.

There were 140 separate events with mens, womens and mixed crews rowing single, double and quad sculls and four- and eight-oared sweep boats, in seven different age categories.

Rowing conditions were very good with lots of sunshine and moderate winds producing a light chop on the water. The course was 1,000 meters with seven lanes, races starting every five minutes all day long.
